Dichiarazioni rilasciate da Onir: 'Ritengo che questo premio costituisca una vittoria per tutti i registi indipendenti. È molto difficile essere un cineasta indipendente. Non è solo una questione di costi di realizzazione e di distribuzione: il nostro cinema è governato dalla regola della gratificazione immediata. E i finanziatori non fanno che ripetere la formula che il pubblico non è interessato. Ma come può fiorire il nostro cinema se i giovani registi non vengono incoraggiati?'.

'Non è un trionfo solo personale. A livello più ampio, è una vittoria per i registi omosessuali e per quei film sempre trascurati dai National Award e dai premi popolari. Ora dovremmo poter lavorare in un'atmosfera di maggior tolleranza e libertà, dal momento che è stato chiaramente affermato che le pellicole sull'omosessualità non sono peccaminose. (A proposito della censura imposta ad I am per la diffusione via satellite) Ho combattuto con tutte le mie forze per salvare la sequenza del bacio fra i due protagonisti omosessuali, ma è stata tagliata. Pare sia consentito il bacio fra uomo e donna, ma non fra due uomini. Non vedo nulla di male nel fatto che il regista Rituparno Ghosh si concentri su film a tematica omosessuale. Se la maggioranza dei cineasti può raccontare esclusivamente relazioni eterosessuali, perché alcuni di noi non possono creare consapevolezza sull'argomento dell'omosessualità attraverso il nostro cinema? Non sto affermando che tutte le mie pellicole si baseranno su tematiche omosessuali, ma se ritengo l'argomento adatto al mio schema creativo, perché no? Il National Award conferito ad I am, film che tratta anche di omosessualità, arriva in una fase in cui abbiamo disperatamente bisogno di superare i pregiudizi contro la comunità omosessuale'.
- Crowd funding: an emerging trend in Bollywood, Renu Singh, The Times of India, 11 marzo 2012:
'How open is the Indian film industry in embracing this new trend?
Small is Big - Onir believes that this notion of funding will be of huge help to independent film makers and those who don’t get funding for innovative concept of movies which don’t follow regular Bollywood tastes. “The important part of crowd-funding is that film makers get finances from people who believe in their projects. It is a huge boost to those who find it difficult to generate finances through other means. We got funding for our out of the box subject. “I Am” is one of smallest budget films of 2011 in Bollywood which is one of largest film industries in the world. Getting a National Award for a film that has been funded this way is not a small deal,” shares Onir. (...)
Risk Reduction - When hundreds of movies in Bollywood releasing every year don’t find a good distribution and exhibition channel, crowd-funding is the safest option that reduces the risk of investment dividing the loss between many who are involved in the funding. Producer Guneet Monga frequently collaborates with Anurag Kashyap and is coming up with an untitled film directed by Vasan Bala. The finances for the movie are being raised through crowd-funding. Says Guneet, “Movies who don’t find studios for funding can very well go to masses and source finances from people who believe in their projects. We are coming up with a movie that is funded through social media. (...) This concept reduces the share of losses incurred. Thus it does not burden a single production house or an individual. Adds Onir, “Apart from reducing risks, crowd funding also lends transparency in financial dealings. One actually doesn’t have to get into talks with people and production houses who can interfere with the work.”
Money Matters - The people investing in movies not only get profit sharing in box-office collections but are also credited as co-producers in the movies. Says Onir, “All 400 investors in “I Am” got acknowledged as co-producers in the movie as well as being part of the profit sharing process.” (...)
The Bigger Picture - However, this funding process only works for small budget films. (...) Says Onir, “Crowd sourcing is more for independent film makers. It is not meant for big budget movies with a huge star cast. In any case, why would they even need it? They have production houses financing big names.” Guneet also says there is a limitation of fund pooled in for finance. “The biggest disadvantage of crowd-funding is you can’t raise a lot of money through it. That could be because it is an entirely new concept for the Indian market. We can hope that the situation improves in future.”
European connection - Another drawback of crowd-funding is that though the concept is doing good in the European market, Indian film makers find hard to attract investors from European countries. Guneet comes up with the solution for this problem. “One needs to structure the film well to access the European funds. One has to have a good script with an universal appeal that people from all over will like to be part of.”(...)
Copy Cat? - Another hitch is that the film’s concept might get copied when one asks for funding in the social media space'.

'What kind of problems did Ashvin face while shooting “Inshallah, Football”? “If a filmmaker puts his camera in Kashmir, he’s already facing a problem. You’re not made to feel particularly welcome by the armed forces. So obviously, I knew I might face some trouble,” Ashvin begins politely, and adds, “Plus, with the issues my films touch upon, they hold up a mirror to the nation. And we, as a nation, have a problem looking at ourselves in the mirror. We tend to smash the mirror even before we can see our reflection in it. (...) While shooting “Inshallah, Football”, I had every inkling that it might be banned, but as long as we don’t push the system, as long as we don’t raise the bar, we’re going to face mediocre treatment, and never let this country grow.” “Inshallah, Football” also has a cameo by J&K CM Omar Abdullah. How did that happen? “I was shooting the film in Kashmir, based on the real life of a young footballer who wants to fly to Brazil to play a football match but the Indian government does not give him a passport because his father is an ex-militant. While the shooting was going on, a journalist wrote about it in the paper there. Omar read about it, called up his department and arranged for a passport for the boy. This happened while we were shooting. So I approached him and luckily, he agreed. It was not me, but destiny that wrote him into the film’s script”.'

Anurag Kashyap commenta così il National Award conferito a Vidya Balan: 'I think Vidya should be given an award just like that for her choice of films. Have other actresses got the confidence to come out of their comfort zone and act in different kinds of films? I am a big supporter of courage. Anybody who shows courage should be rewarded. The box office is rewarding her and the country is applauding her so I am happy for Vidya Balan. (...) I have thought about casting her many times and we have talked about ideas, but it has to be the right thing because people have certain expectations from her. I can't take a film to her unless the film is on her'.
